Is Your HVAC Repair Man Insured?

When it comes to taking care of your home and the appliances in it, most people have a specific person that comes to make repairs when needed. Sometimes a repair man might be someone from a large shop or department store, or sometimes it might be a small business owner. Either way, you should always make sure your repair man is insured.

What does it mean to be insured?

Just like home, auto, or health insurance, having insurance as a repairman or handyman can protect you and the repairman in the event of an accident.

For a person in the repair service industry, insurance protects a serviceman in the event of injury or property damage. Any time an accident occurs on the job could be devastating, insurance helps to protect against the risk involved in being a repairman.

For a potential customer, insurance protects you as well. If an accident or damage to your property occurs, you want some assurance that the damage will be covered. If the repairman did not have insurance and major damage occurred, you might be able to sue for the damages, but you are not likely to get full compensation.

Your current repair man or prospective hire should carry proof of insurance with them at all times. To verify their status, you should be able to call and verify their information.

Why aren’t all repairmen insured?

Repairmen, or handymen, aren’t necessarily required to be insured. Especially if he or she typically only does small jobs, even liability insurance might seem expensive or unnecessary to the person.

If the repairman is from a company that employs multiple people, they are likely covered by at least liability insurance. If they work for themselves, however, you might need to get proof that he or she is insured since it isn’t a requirement to conduct business.

Why is insurance important?

You want your repair man to be insured in the event of an accident.

For example, if you hire a handyman to come make repairs to one of your potentially expensive appliances, you want to know that there is coverage should an accident occur. If somehow the repair man has an accident and is hurt, you could be liable if he or she is not properly insured. Or, if he or she damages the appliance they are working on, you want to know that the damages will be covered.

Not only that, but a repairman that is licensed and insured properly ensures that you are hiring a professional. It speaks to the level of professionalism and that he or she knows what they are doing. It is a definite must have for a handyman resume when you are looking to hire.

If you are looking for a repair man or handyman to work for you, it is a good idea to make insurance a top priority in your list of requirements. If you have an existing repair man, you might want to ask them if they are insured and if they aren’t, recommend they do so for safety.

For residents of Southern Maryland, the arrival of spring often brings the joy of blooming flowers and warmer weather. However, it also marks a crucial time to consider something often invisible but vital to our well-being: the air we breathe. Simmons Heating and Air Conditioning Company is proud to highlight Air Quality Awareness Week, taking place from April 28th to May 4th, and to emphasize the importance of clean indoor air for your home and health. Air Quality Awareness Week, organized annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), aims to educate the public about the impact of air pollution on our health and the steps we can take to improve air quality, both indoors and outdoors. While we often think of outdoor air quality, the air inside our homes can be surprisingly more polluted.
